This program was created to engage UM students, faculty, and staff and help increase voter registrations on campus. The program also assists in educating students about the democratic process. Ambassadors attend a training, which includes in-depth tutorials on how to adequately fill out the registration form and assist and encourage students to vote at events and programs.
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S. or by naturalization, have become citizens.
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. First observed in 2012, it has quickly gained momentum ever since. Nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date. Celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of September, UM will celebrate National Voter Registration Day on September 17, 2024.
Voter Registration is at the heart of democratic engagement and encouraging students to register and/or become registered in their local community. UM hosts and encourages voter registration through drives both online and in-person.
In order to promote educated voting, events are held by Get Out The Vote to encourage civic participation and increase voter education before students vote on Election Days and throughout the academic year.
The University of Miami has a voting precinct on campus for Election Days. Get Out The Vote in collaboration with the 'Canes Vote Network mobilizes on Election Day to encourage students, faculty, and staff to vote. Get Out the Vote also partners with Student Government and Parking and Transportation to provide transportation to polls for the early voting period.
UM students reside on campus from across the country and world. Get Out The Vote hosts programs and events to encourage absentee voting or vote by mail. UM has seen the rates of Vote by Mail increase since 2012.
On Election Days, GOTV sponsors a campus-wide celebration in coordination with all members of the 'Canes Vote Network. Throughout the day, members of the University of Miami community are encouraged to vote in person and stay engaged online through social media. In the evening, after polls are closed, the campus community comes together to watch the results of the election.
